Starship Robots are electrically powered and emit zero emissions, contributing to improved local air quality. They are also 25 times more energy-efficient than a single-car shopping trip, and in Northampton, they have prevented an estimated 65 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere.
The robots are equipped with advanced technology, including 9 cameras, 8 ultrasonic obstacle detectors, a radar, 2 Inertial Measurement Units, and a GPS, allowing them to navigate autonomously on pavements.
Residents can access the service via the Starship Food Delivery app, where they can order groceries, schedule deliveries, and track the robot's journey in real-time.
The robots travel at the speed of a pedestrian (no faster than 4mph) and use a combination of sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to navigate around obstacles.
Starship Technologies, the company behind the robots, has been operating in Northampton since November 2020, and the service has continued to expand, offering the ease and convenience of autonomous delivery to more local residents.
The company has also expanded its service to other areas such as Wellingborough, Higham Ferrers, and Rushden in North Northamptonshire.
As of 2025, Starship Robots have completed over 260,000 deliveries in Northampton and have contributed to a 64,000kg reduction in CO2 emissions.
The robots are a much-loved fixture in the community, providing a convenient, carbon-free way to get groceries and are part of the local community's daily life.
