UNITED NATIONS Sustainable Development Goals

The United Kingdom has committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030.

WHAT ARE THE GLOBAL GOALS ?

SDG = sustainable development goal

What are the SDGs?

The SDGs were launched in 2015 and apply to all UN members, including the United Kingdom.

The central aim is to “leave no one behind” and “reach the furthest behind first” .
Someone might be “left behind” on the grounds of income, gender, disability, age, ethnicity, or where they live.

There are 17 SDGs (see below image), with 169 targets for meeting them. Goals to achieve by 2030 include:

UK aid and the SDGs

The UK is seen as one of the leaders in securing the commitment to “leave no-one behind” in 2015, with then Prime Minister David Cameron holding a high-level panel at the UN. The current lead for UK global efforts on the SDGs is the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

SDG 7 aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. Wind energy can play a significant role in achieving this goal, as it is one of the most cost-effective and scalable sources of renewable energy. Wind turbines can be installed in both onshore and offshore locations, making it accessible to many regions around the world. The continued development and deployment of wind energy will be essential in achieving SDG 7

UK Government unveils new powers to approve onshore wind farms

The government has unveiled plans to give ministers the final say on approving large onshore wind farms rather than leaving decisions to local councils, where opposition has often been fierce.

The plan is among proposals announced by Energy Secretary Ed Miliband on Friday as part of what the government is calling an "ambitious" action plan for reaching 95% clean energy in the UK by 2030.

Miliband also wants to give powers to the energy regulator to prioritise projects in the queue waiting to link up with the National Grid.

SDG 7 -The (Energy) Answer e Blowing in the Wind-By Dr. Eitan Eliram Lead Innovation Strategist Feb 2024

Background

Israel’s very first wind farm was the Golan Heights Wind Farm, built in 1992 by Mey Eden and supported by the Ministry of Energy Infrastructure. It is also the first commercial wind-power project in the Middle East.

Located 1050 m above sea level 5 km south of Quneitra. The energy generated by the 10 Floda 600 wind turbines generates 6 megawatts of energy, which is consumed by the Mey Eden plant, the Golan Heights winery, and about 20,000 residents of the Golan Heights. The remaining energy is fed into the electrical grid.

VECOY

Vecoy was selected from 1,200 applicants worldwide and is one of eight startup companies to win the chance to go to space. Vecoy won the second prize given by the Center for Advancement of Science in Space, the non-profit research and development wing of the International Space Station US Laboratory. The research will be done as part of the MassChallenge Startup Accelerator.

Future arsenal against biological warfare

Prior to joining Vecoy over the last year, Eliram attended Singularity University, a multinational program based at NASA’s Ames Research Base in California — the same program that inspired Vecoy’s founder Erez Livneh to create the company.

Eliram, now the ambassador for Singularity University in Israel, says the United States is particularly interested in the Vecoy platform as it investigates building a futuristic arsenal against a potential viral threat from biological warfare.
Meanwhile, the company seeks a round of financing of about $5 million to propel its technology to pre-clinical trials and the outer limits of medical advancements far beyond what humanity has possibly ever seen.

“We have good connections with the bio-defense industry,” says Eliram.

“NASA is paying attention just as other governments are paying attention.”

WHAT IS SINGULARITY

As a general definition, transhumanism is “the belief or theory that the human race can evolve beyond its current physical and mental limitations, especially by means of science and technology.” The ultimate limit for human beings is, of course, death.

Many transhumanists hope to use science to escape death. That is why some folks plan to freeze their corpses in the hope of being revived later when technology progresses.

The ultimate hope rests in “The Singularity,” when the capacity of computers accelerates exponentially, leading to general artificial intelligence. As part of this machine awakening, there also will come the possibility of uploading your consciousness into silicon, guaranteeing a kind of immortality (as long as there are machines to store and process your “connectome”).

The Singularity University is launched with backing from NASA and Google

Google and NASA are throwing their weight behind a new school for futurists in Silicon Valley, the school will prepare scientists for an era when machines become smarter than people.

The new institution, known as Singularity University, is to be headed by futurist Ray Kurzweil, who has warned that preparation is needed for when the point is reached that computers are able to improve themselves through artificial intelligence.
